Day 3

The hardest day so far is underway

Today Team Alpine will climb up to 4600 metres to the base of the Lava Tower for lunch and acclimatisation.

The Lava Tower ascent is quite gradual, and they will have an opportunity to rest and eat lunch when they arrive. Along the way, they will have excellent views of Helm Glacier, the Western Breach and Kibo. This will be their toughest day so far and they may for the first time feel the altitude.

After lunch they will descend again by almost 650 metres to Barranco camp, following the “walk high, sleep low” golden rule of acclimatisation. The descent to Barranco camp takes about 2 hours and offers great opportunities to take some beautiful photographs of the Western Breach and Breach Wall. The camp is situated in a valley below the Breach and Great Barranco Wall.

Elevation: 3850metres to 4600metres to 3950metres

Distance: 12 kilometres

Time: 6 -7 hours

Habitat: Semi-desert

Please keep the donations coming in, it will be such a boost to the team if they get to the summit and find out they’ve reached their target for both charities.
